Lambert and Hosgood fire Colts to winning start
September 9, 2018

On the opening day of the 2018/19 season the Colts lads made the familiar journey to Hatches Farm, having recently tasted victory against the hosts in a tight pre-season fixture. The Hamble players arrived in good spirits, looking confident and well prepared in the build up to kick off. The Colts shaped up with the same defensive line that started in their final pre-season fixture, bolstered by the return of goalkeeper Blackburn from a two-week loan spell in Mallorca. Collins came in for the injured skipper Dacre, who showed his support and leadership qualities from the touchline throughout. Bailey also supported the team from the technical area, and looks encouragingly close to returning to competitive action after missing last season through illness.

Hamble began the game strongly, controlling possession in their own half and looking comfortable on the ball. Waddock and Brooks combined well down the right hand side, looking to thread passes through to Rowe and Lambert who were a constant threat attacking the space in behind. It wasn’t long before the Colts lads took the lead, with a pin-point corner from Collins finding an unmarked Lambert who headed home from close range. A fantastic start for both players on their competitive debuts.

Hamble continued to control the game, with the hosts offering little in attack. Waddock, Head and Whiteman, with the defensive support of Brooks and Ceesay, looked resolute, dealing with any long balls and looking to recycle possession coolly. Somehow, Wellow found a way back into the game after a long range free kick was nodded in at the far post. Perhaps a slight lack of organisation from the Colts but an unfortunate goal to concede against the run of play.

Hamble rallied and bounced back almost immediately. Lambert picked up the ball in the left channel and produced a piece of magic as he turned and beat the keeper from distance, the ball crashing in off the far post. An early contender for goal of the season.

HT: Wellow U18s 1-2 Hamble Colts U18s

Both sides remained unchanged after the break but it wasn’t long before Hamble made use of their strong bench, with Mason and Spacagna replacing Collins and Ceesay. The Colts continued to look comfortable with Blackburn rarely being called into action, making arguably his best save of the match to prevent a near own goal. Whiteman demonstrated his versatility, moving to wing-back and playing brilliantly as always. Rowe also dropped deeper to support Chivers and Butler, who all battled and combined well on the ball to create chances on the counter attack, with Mason coming close to scoring on a few occasions.

Hosgood and Charlton replaced Lambert and Brooks as the final changes, with Hosgood making an instant impact playing on the shoulder of the last defender. As the Wellow defenders looked to tire, Butler slipped a pass through to Hosgood who found himself 1v1 with the goalkeeper and placed the ball calmly into the side netting. The parents erupted in celebration on the touchline and the entire squad celebrated together, an unforgettable moment and a real demonstration of team unity.

FT: Wellow U18s 1-3 Hamble Colts U18s

Overall an excellent result for the Colts lads in their opening fixture, a fantastic team performance and a MOTM performance from Lambert. Though the game was marred in some controversy, the Hamble players can be proud of the way they carried themselves. Special thanks to all parents and supporters who spent their Sunday morning cheering on the lads, it’s much appreciated.

Colts can hold heads high in defeat against strong opposition
August 26, 2018

With just two weeks left until the season opener, Hamble Colts U18s travelled to Fareham Town U18s for their final pre-season fixture and toughest test yet, with hopes of another positive performance. Colts were without goalkeeper Blackburn and 2017/18 top scorer Mason who were both unavailable for selection, although central defender Charlton was happy to provide cover in goal, putting in an impressive performance and most notably making a fantastic diving save mid-way through the first half.

Whiteman, Head and Waddock started in a back 3 and all showed their defensive qualities in the early goings, allowing the opposition attackers no space or time on the ball. Waddock, encouraged to bring the ball out from the back, even managed to fashion himself a chance on the half-volley, narrowly missing. Head impressed with his leadership qualities and Whiteman was reliable as ever. A midfield of Brooks, Chivers, Butler, Dacre and Ceesay looked to provide protection and support on the counter, all of whom’s work rate was immense. Rowe and Lambert aimed to continue their impressive pre-season form in providing the Colts a threat on the break, hassling opposition defenders and combining to create chances for each other.

Fareham controlled the early part of the game, keeping possession and moving the ball well across the pitch. Hamble however looked dogged and determined without the ball, keeping their shape brilliantly. The hosts eventually took the lead on 20 mins after a piece of individual brilliance, and their lead was then doubled not long after as a hopeful bicycle kick looped into the top corner from 10yds, the Colts lads could feel unlucky to be two goals behind after an organised and positive start.

At a point where heads could have easily dropped, Hamble looked to pick themselves up and continued to work hard, showing fantastic determination. Chivers, Dacre and Butler began to get more of a foothold in the game, picking up loose balls and shifting the play quickly out wide to Brooks and Ceesay who both looked confident with the ball at their feet. It wasn’t long until the Colts lads efforts were rewarded after Lambert won the ball back in the opposition half and slipped in strike-partner Rowe who confidently tucked past the goalkeeper.

Unfortunately, as Hamble pushed for an equaliser towards the end of the half, they were caught on the break and the hosts made it 3-1. Although the Colts lads can feel hard done by as the linesman flagged for offside but was overruled by the referee. Moments later, the Colts bounced back as Lambert and Rowe combined again with Rowe beating the keeper once more with an excellent left-footed finish. Rowe continuing his scintillating form in front of goal, scoring 3 goals in 3 pre-season fixtures.

HT Fareham Town FC U18s 3-2 Hamble Colts FC U18s.

Both sides made changes at the break, again looking to ensure that all players are as fit and match-ready as possible heading into the new season. Collins, Spacagna and Hosgood all came on for the Colts and impressed with their energy. Collins showed he is more than capable of spear-heading the Hamble midfield in the absence of Dacre who will be missing for early part of the season through injury. (Get well soon skipper!) Spacagna looked confident once again at the back, showing promising signs after returning from a serious injury last season. Hosgood also worked tirelessly, pressuring the opposition defenders and looking to link the play well with the wide players.

The second half played out similarly to the first, with the hosts controlling possession and Hamble continuing to demonstrate just how defensively organised they can be. Legs began to tire towards the end though, perhaps affected by a depleted squad and unfavourable weather conditions, but the Colts were still unfortunate to concede two late goals, a scoreline which slightly flattered the hosts.

FT Fareham Town FC U18s 5-2 Hamble Colts FC U18s.

All in all a mature and determined performance against tough and talented opposition, the Colts lads certainly showed they belong on the same pitch and on another day could’ve come away with the win. Special thanks to Fareham Town FC U18s for hosting and to all parents and supporters who made the journey and braved the weather to support the lads. All eyes now look towards the season opener on 9th September.

Lambert double proves to be the difference
August 12, 2018

Two weeks after their first pre-season fixture ended somewhat disappointingly in a draw, the Colts lads were focused and determined to put in an improved performance and show just how hard they have been working on the training pitch recently. Originally seen as a realistic test heading into the new season against a side that Colts had failed to beat at two times of asking last season (2-3 & 0-0), it later became apparent that this would be a dress-rehearsal for the season opener, also away vs Wellow on 9th September.

Colts shaped up in a 3-5-2, with a new look, no-nonsense back line of Chris Charlton, Lewis Head and newest signing Dylan Spacagna starting together for the first time. Harry Chivers, Tyler Butler and Josh Collins occupied the central midfield roles, with Kajale Ceesay and Owen Brooks looking to provide pace and width from left and right wing-back respectively. Jay Rowe and Leon Lambert started together for the second time, looking to build on an already promising strike partnership.

Wellow were certainly the side who started fastest, controlling the game in the early goings and testing the Colts back line. The Colts defence stood strong though, with Charlton, Spacagna and Head remaining compact, allowing the Wellow strikers no space and all making several successful tackles. As the first half continued, the Colts midfield began to settle on the ball, with Butler, Chivers and Collins demonstrating some clever interplay and both Brooks and Ceesay starting to threaten out wide. Not long after, Rowe won the ball back on the half-way line and slipped a pass through to Lambert who beat the Wellow defenders for pace and finished comfortably with his right foot. Minutes later, recent bleep test co-champ Lambert added another with his left, now two goals in two games for the new signing.

Both sides made changes at half-time, with a couple of the Colts lads nursing minor injuries and plenty of others looking to increase their match fitness. The second half was played at an equally frantic pace, with Ceesay continuing to beat the opposite full back and threaten down the left, creating chances which were unlucky not to be converted. Chivers and Butler controlled the midfield for the majority of the half, combining with Dacre who looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Waddock, Hosgood and Mason were also introduced during the second-half and caused Wellow problems with their work-rate and tenacity.

Credit to Wellow though, who didn’t stop battling and were eventually rewarded with a rather dubious indirect free kick just outside the six-yard area after a block-tackle was adjudged as a back pass. Goalkeeper Louis Blackburn and his defence on the goal line did what they could, but the ball found its way into the net. Impressively though, the Colts lads didn’t let this unsettle them and continued to defend well both individually and as a unit. Blackburn was called into action one last time late on as he made a fantastic reaction save to prevent a Wellow equaliser.

Overall an excellent pre-season workout for the Colts lads; an evenly matched, passionate game of football played at a high tempo. Special thanks to Wellow FC for hosting, we look forward to seeing you again for the season opener on Sunday 9th September. Again, thanks to all the parents and supporters who made the early morning journey out to Hatches Farm, your support and encouragement is well-appreciated.

Colts first pre-season outing ends in a draw
July 30, 2018

On the final Sunday morning of July - which could easily have been mistaken for the middle of winter - Hamble Colts U18s embarked on the first of their pre-season fixtures against a newly formed Bush Hill side. Despite the poor weather, the Colts lads looked focused and ready in the build-up to kick-off, with new signings Leon Lambert, Owen Brooks and Chris Charlton all making their first starts for the club, as well as Josh Collins coming off the bench.

The first half began as expected, with Colts dominating possession, moving the ball smoothly through the lines and probing the Bush Hill defence. Brooks showed real glimpses of what he is capable of at wing-back before being forced off with a minor knee injury, but a sign of good things to come. Colts then broke the deadlock through youngest player and recent bleep test champ Harry Chivers, who showed class in shifting the ball onto his left and then stroking into the far corner from just outside the box.

Colts lead was then doubled just before the break, when Jay Rowe scored a similarly exquisite goal from the edge of the box with his left foot. A fitting reward for all the hard work he has already put in over this short pre-season period. It was not all Colts though, as goalkeeper Louis Blackburn pulled off a textbook highlight-reel save at his near-post, parrying the ball away from the top corner.

Both sides made changes at the break, looking to give their players as many pre-season minutes as possible to prepare for the long season ahead. The wind continued to howl and the rain continued to crash down onto the hard ground as Bush Hill looked to have the bit between their teeth in the second-half, pressing much harder than they had in the first. As the half went on the Colts lads seemed to tire, perhaps to be expected as this was their first friendly compared to being Bush Hill's fourth, but credit to the hosts for their resilience and they were rewarded with a goal as their number 9 cut in from the right and flashed the ball into the Colts net, despite Blackburn's best efforts to keep it out.

Bush Hill kept plugging away, and with the strong wind preventing the Colts from effectively clearing their lines, the hosts were awarded a dubious penalty late on after Lewis Head was judged to have used excessive force just inside the box, another lesson learned. The penalty was coolly dispatched by the number 9, and honours were even with no time for either side to grab a winner.

Overall a positive start to pre-season for the Colts with some real highlights in the first-half, and some important lessons learned in the second. All at Hamble Colts wish Bush Hill FC U18s the best of luck for this upcoming season.

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the players and parents who are no longer involved, as well as all those who have stayed with us and even braved the horrific weather to support and encourage the team. It is incredible what a positive atmosphere can do for young players' development.

Goodbye from Me

April 28, 2018

The final games went as expected and Colts finished 7th out of 10 which despite best efforts has to go down as disappointing.  There was not a whole lot of difference between all the teams and the lads ran the winners close twice and beat the second placed team which shows they can do it. Mediocre performances allied with a lack of teamwork let the season down  and the teams that should have been beaten were not.

A number of the lads are moving on next season so good luck to them in their ventures and even more good luck to the lads that remain to form the U18s. I think perhaps a slightly smaller squad might also  help with formation, team selection and substitutions.

I am also moving on so will pass the mantle of Web Wizardy on to Manager Alex. Good luck for next season.

Also a big thank you to the club (specifically Jo)  for the last couple of years from Tommy  and also from Jackie and I. It has been a pleasure to be involved in a winning club with a standout memory being the Holland tour, thank you.

Season ends with a loss for Colts

April 28, 2018

The last game of the season ended in the inevitable defeat that most people expected. Despite clearly being able to match if not beat half of the teams in this division there seems to be a mental block which leads to the lads not beleiveing they can win before they even start.
Wasps were matched in the opening exchanges and Colts had numerous sustained attacks without any clear chances. A superb long range drilled shot gave Wasps the lead against the run of play after 20 mins which they held until half time.
Again the start of the second half was close but Colts were edging the early exchanges only to be thwarted by another astute finish to put Wasps 2 up. Colts then sprung into life taking control of the game. Numerous corners and free kicks led to a number of great efforts one of which was converted by Kajale from close range. Wasps were rattled and there looked to be only one team scoring next. However as the script has recently been going, Wasps killed off the charge with another long range unstoppable finish. 3-1 game gone.

A tough season is now complete with the prospect of a 6th or 7th place finish when realistically top 4 could have been achieved. The lads had a poor season start with a really tough run of fixtures when they were still finding their feet as a team. A great mid season with a really good run of results the best being the 2-1 win over second place side BTC, was however let down by a poor final set of results which has taken the gloss off the season.

If the team is to be successful next season much work is needed, mostly on teamwork, attitude and motivation. Good luck lads.

Narrow Victory over United

April 23, 2018

The hopes of having an evening game on a warm spring day were severely dashed by a dank, dark, windy, wet scrap that saw Colts repeat their earlier narrow win over United.

In fact the match report could be copied straight from the earlier match. There was a lot of huff and puff interspersed with flashes of good football from both sides but nothing to really excite an expectant and damp crowd. Mid way through the first half a good ball enabled Riley to just  nip in front of the keeper and with a lot to do calmly chipped the ball, curling it into the top corner with a superb finish. Not a great deal left to tell to be honest, one flash of brilliance from Harry on a mazey run beating 4 or 5 players only to direct his shot at the keeper and a couple of excellent saves from Louis.   The second half consisted of the same with much effort with no reward and a few goal mouth scrambles at both ends. Everyone but mostly the crowd were happy to hear the whistle and take the 1-0 win and try to get warm. A draw would probably have been a fairer result.

The high hopes of a third place finish have been blown away by some strange results and unfortunately seventh looks favourite now as the season limps to an uninspiring end.

U16s Mauled by Lions

April 14, 2018

Lions had previously beaten a lack lustre Colts earlier in the season 6-0 to inflict their worst ever defeat. Hopes were therefore not high. The first half performance was a vast improvement on previous weeks with a much better shape playing 2 up front and the team actually pressed and looked dangerous without reward. However unnecessary ill discipline cost us dearly with a free kick from out wide superbly headed home by Lions to lead 1-0 at half time.

The second half was closely fought but Colts discipline and shape started to drift and Lions were finding way too much time and space. This was proven with 2 well taken but avoidable goals converted from within the area with balls that should have been cut out.  3-0.  A last minute penalty converted by Josh gave colts a consolation that they probably just about deserved. Despite a good first half show the problems with discipline, teamwork and needless niggle look to have undermined the hard work put in.

Two games to go and despite a poor run of form Colts have an outside chance of climbing as high as third. Come on last one last big effort!

U16s Ravaged by Leopards

April 07, 2018

Having beaten the Leopards earlier in the season and on current form this was a game Colts should have won. After a couple of early warning the boys went one and then two down to sloppy goals without offering much in return. Despite what looked like a lot of effort being put in Colts could not get their passing football going and the play was very disjointed with a noticeable lack of teamwork and positional awareness.

There was one other problem, the ref. I was going to say that I have never seen such an incompetent performance but that would be lying as I saw this ref last year and he did it then too. We all know the ref's job is tough but you need to actually make some decisions and if you let every foul go unpunished you end up losing the players confidence and they start to take their own actions to compensate. This is what happened and the boys safety was in jeopardy.  Harry picked up a yellow card for retaliation after an unpunished assault from the rear and after one final tenderising challenge from Josh just after half time the ref had had enough. In a bizarre incident the ref effectively sent himself off, picked up his belongings and trudged out of the ground as if pacing out the longest defensive wall in history.

Back on the field with a new ref appointed there was a rather muted atmosphere as the game restarted. Hopes were high of a change of fortune but a well worked and superbly finished third killed the game off. Colts grabbed a goal with about 5 minutes to go with a well struck shot from Jay from outside the box which took a deflection on the way in. Game on ?  No. Leopards raced up the other end where the very proficient lady person player headed home from a pinpoint cross. 4-1 full time.

Despite the problems with the ref, the better side on the day rightly won through and unless Colts can somehow pull together, regroup and muster some confidence and teamwork gaining any further points this season looks a tall order.

U16s Breeze past St Francis

March 25, 2018

A good, positive start to the match culminated in Adam scoring the first goal of the game after a good pass from Josh, who put him through one on one with the St Francis goalkeeper.  Hamble continued to dominate the first half but didn't manage to create another decent chance.  St Francis looked dangerous every so often when they played a long ball over the top. However, Jacob and Lewis dealt with each one with ease, keeping Louis away from the action.

The second half started as the first half ended with Hamble in total control and Jay calmly slotted the second home after good work on the left.  As hard as Hamble tried they could not score a third.  St Francis did not have much to offer in the second half, their only chance was when a mistake let in the St Francis forward whose shot was calmly watched by Louis as it bounced off the inside of the post and away to safety.  Finally, Ben scored a third late in the game as his goal hanging finally paid off.

U16s Colts stung by Wasps

February 25, 2018

It was no surprise that Warsash would be strong opponents and unfortunately the game was lost in the first 20 minutes. 2 very well taken headed goals and 2 mistakes costs the lads dearly and despite pulling one back from a good header by Kajale before half time they went in 4-1 down with a hopeless task ahead. Hopes were raised when Brad looped the ball in from the touch line to take it to 4-2 and then a couple of good chances could have provided a life line. This was was snuffed out with a 5th Wasps goal and the game was all but over. The lads did battle well and could have made this closer than the score suggests. They will have a chance to test this theory in the return match which is coming soon. FT 5-2

U11s - Pace Outpaced

February 25, 2018

Under 11’s Junior Premier League – Sunday 25th February 2018 by Simon Firth

Hamble Colts 8 - Pace Jaguars 3

Pace outpaced
It was absolutely freezing today and the pitch had to be shortened due to a frozen goalmouth at one end. Not the best start. The parents looked chilly and were hoping to be warmed by some good football.

1st quarter – 2-1 Hamble
Hamble started brightly and were playing the best football. The boys were passing, tackling well and keeping possession. Pace were struggling to get a foothold in the game. The pressure eventually told with Chase setting up Jake for the first goal. A second followed after a great move down the left ended with Chase making a great cross finished coolly by Jake. Against the run of play, Pace scored just before the break.

2nd quarter – 0-2 Pace Jaguars
Hamble went to sleep in this quarter. The parents were wondering what was going on. The gaffer didn’t look happy. In fairness, Pace worked hard to take advantage of the gaps appearing in midfield which left the defence under pressure. They scored 2 well deserved goals. Hamble had their chances, with Chase hitting the post.

3rd quarter – 1-0 Hamble Colts
Words of wisdom from Sam obviously did the trick. Though, a resurgent Pace were playing with more confidence and Hamble had to work hard and battle to win the ball. Hamble pressed with Zach having a good game in midfield. He hit the post early in the quarter. Hamble were creating chances and a clinical Chase scored a great goal mid way through the quarter. The crucial confidence battle was won by Hamble in this part of the game. The Pace team started to look tired.

4th quarter – 5-0 Hamble Colts
The fitness and pace of Hamble Colts was the difference between the 2 teams in the final quarter. Chase and Riley overran their defence time after time. Riley scored 3 breakaway goals early in the quarter which knocked the confidence out of the Pace team who then struggled to get into the game. Hamble continued to press forward for more goals with one move ending in an unstoppable shot from Chase inside the area. Riley capped off an excellent performance with a 4th goal which was a tap in from close range after some excellent work from Jake.

Well played boys. Some great football today.

U16s Colts Climb to Third

February 18, 2018

The shaky start to the season is now a long distant memory and the lads are now only looking upwards having risen to the dizzy heights of third after a superb victory against the previously flawless BTC.

There was quite a lot of feeling in the game and the boys knew it would be tough after a narrow 2-1 defeat earlier on in the season. BTC are a good side but certainly not as good as their 100% record suggested and they were there for the taking if the desire was right.

The game started evenly with tough challenges and good defence at both ends but with no real chances. A great free kick was tipped on to the bar by the BTC keeper and the ensuing pressure allowed Ben to guide over a perfect cross for Liam to slot home from close range on the 16th minute. The linesman had flagged the goal offside but the ref correctly played on as the offside player made no attempt to join in the play. This just added to the whinging from the BTC players and management and the amount of abuse the ref received was ugly to see. Despite being brave enough to stick with this decision he later showed that the goading was effecting him as he proceeded to give BTC every decision they bleated for.

A tightly contested first half ended with Colts holding their 1-0 lead with some ease with stand out performances in midfield from Brad and Josh combined with illusive play from Kajale.

A bold decision by the boss to make 5 changes at half time looked to have failed as the boys started erratically and BTC drew level 5 minutes in after the ball was given away several times and finally bundled home for a messy equalizer. 1-1.

The tackles got tougher and the amount of pressure being put on Colts was increasing every minute. Normally, keeping to the scheme of life Hamble would end up losing this game 2 or 3 -1, maybe today would be different? The 5 changes then started to show their worth as superior fitness levels and quality possession shone through. A few chances were coming now with counter attacks as BTC pushed forward with Louis making his customary worldie save or two.

On 71 minutes Tom M had a clear run down the left wing and as he approached the box he delivered the perfect cross, just bending out of the reach of 2 defenders and away from the on rushing keeper directly into the stride of the approaching Riley who smashed the ball in to the top corner from the edge of the 6 yard box.

The final minutes were frantic with a few goal mouth scrambles and a post being hit but the back 4 of Ben, Lewis, Jacob and Tommy stood firm and repelled the BTC hordes.

A well deserved victory with the best perfomance of the season so far and the boys are now playing like a well drilled team.

U16s - Did Goliath crush David?

January 14, 2018

Match Report by the Whitears - V Testlands 14/01/2018

Hamble Colts turned up hoping to continue their winning run in 2018 against a Testlands side who they had beaten 4-3 in a well contested match earlier in the season.  After finding out Testlands only had 8 players, possibly due to the Bermuda Triangle around Hamble or maybe something more sinister, expectations were high.

The game started slightly late.  The numbers advantage should have meant Hamble would control the game, but this was not the case.  Testlands got stuck in and worked incredibly hard to make it difficult for our boys and for most of the first half you would have thought they had a full team.  The Hamble lads seemed to think that the goals would just come without really trying, and how wrong they would be.  On a number of occasions, Jacob made crucial blocks and tackles stopping the Testlands forward from having shots on goals and Louis pulled off saves when called upon.  It seemed at times that a number of the Hamble players thought that their only job was to try and score goals rather than pass and defend.  Hamble did create a number of good chances throughout the first half. Tom M had a shot cleared off the line, and a number of goal saving tackles were also made by the Testlands defenders to keep the score at 0 - 0.  The breakthrough finally came went Riley was brought down in the 30th minute for a penalty that Josh stroked home comfortably.  This was the only goal of the first half.  During half time, the tea room proved to be particularly popular by  fans from both sides.

The second half started, once the referee had spent a penny and had a well deserved cup of tea.  The Testlands lads continued to work really hard and didn't give up, competing for every ball and again coming close on a number of occasions.  However, the defence looked more solid when Tommy was moved to centre half to partner Jacob. Some of the Hamble players, however, did not look as though they had the desire to win the game, giving Testlands hope that their hard work may pay dividends. Hamble, however, did continue to make chances and finally won 4 - 0 through additional goals from Liam, Ben and Harry. (Editors note - use of "however" in three consecutive sentences could be classed as repetition) -

Good performances came from Louis, Tommy, Jacob, Joe, Brad and Harry, (and Martin and Jo in the bushes!).

The way the Testlands players played as a team and worked for each other should be a lesson for the Hamble lads, who were often too busy concentrating on their own bids for glory rather than playing as part of a team. Hopefully, Hamble will act like a more cohesive unit next match, working for each other, and understanding their position on the field.

U16s There's Only One Team in Hamble

January 07, 2018

High hopes of a comfortable match against a weakened United side were misplaced. The local rivalry was tangible and this showed in a tense opening. After 5 minutes probably the scrappiest goal ever witnessed was bundled in by Adam after a spill by the United keeper. This should have settled the nerves but Colts could not quite do enough to grab the all important second. Tyler came close hitting the woodwork but neither side really looked like adding to the score in the first half. 1-0 HT.

The slope and wind firmly in Colts favour should have meant further scores , or that's the way it looked. Despite constant pressure and many chances the lads could not put the ball away. Tom  M, Adam, Josh, Kajale and others all came close. Despite dominating the game United still had at least 4 golden opportunities to level if not take the lead. These all came from the same source, long ball over the top with Colts being saved by wayward shooting, the post and a smart block from Louis.  A few very tasty tackles went unpunished by the ref earlier on in the game which led to some unsavoury challenges from both sides as they lads played "what do we need to do the get booked?."  The final whistle thankfully arrived with no broken legs and no further scoring for a 1-0 win in a game that could have been anything from 10-0 to 4-4. Notable performances from Kajale, Tom M and Tom T.

The march up the table continues.

Guidance for Assitant Referees

Interesting snippet from a guide for referees assistants....

9. Do NOT coach the players if you are running the line. You can commend them on good tackling, great shooting, good header etc, but you cannot tell the defensive line to move up to catch the striker offside.
League rules state the linesman should not coach.

The crispy early morning kick off did not disappoint and ultimately left the spectators with a warm glow. Recent encounters wit St Francis have always been close and this started out in the same way. Early attacks were even with a couple of goal mouth scrambles from Colts and some over the top long balls from St Francis looking the most likely way the deadlock would be broken.  The game turned on 33 minutes when Tommy came off the bench and did absolutely nothing to influence another goal mouth scramble that led to a smart finish from Riley.  HT 0-1 with the game still in the balance.

A few changes were made and it was clear that Colts now had more control over the midfield with Harry, Josh and Brad bossing the game and Tom M providing an immediate attacking threat down the wing. This extra possession was rightly rewarded after Josh powered home after a slick move. Two excellent moves and early crosses from Tom M  allowed Riley to hammer home the advantage with goals on 60 and 64 to complete a well earned hat trick. 4-1. St Francis grabbed what was now a consolation on  66 minutes again from a ball over the top which was for once controlled by the centre forward. The goal spurred St Francis on for a short while with a misplaced belief that they could get something from the game. This hope was quashed by Liam on 76 minutes when he smashed the ball into the roof of the net from a full 2 yards out. 5-1 FT.

In what could have been a tricky game Colts cruised to an easy win where the higher skill  levels and effort  were rewarded.  Colts are now in a comfortable mid table position with all thoughts of a relegation battle behind them (hopefully).

Special thanks to Jo for being Santa after the game to provide all the boys (and some of the older kids )   a little treat.

U11s Festival football from Hamble Colts to secure a well deserved win

December 03, 2017

JPL Match Report – Sunday 3rd December  by Simon Firth

Romsey Town Panthers U11 – 2 Hamble Colts U11- 4

Festival football from Hamble Colts to secure a well deserved win..

Another tactical masterclass from the Gaffer. Who needs Pep Guardiola when your team is coached by Sam?

Another excellent performance from the boys today in a tough game against an accomplished Romsey Town team. Their superb keeper helped keep the score down and stopped Chase from bagging a hat-trick.

Each quarter was hotly contested with some good football from both teams. Strong defending from Hamble and excellent distribution through midfield put pressure on Romsey throughout the game. Our pace up front was devastating at times and solid defence was the difference between the two teams. However, their keeper was not easily beaten and every goal from Hamble needed to be top quality. Chase’s lob over the keeper was the pick of the bunch.

Scores for each quarter

1st quarter – 0-1

2nd quarter – 1-2

3rd quarter – 0-0

4th quarter - 1-1

That’s it for now and sorry for the short report. The day job has taken over....

U16s Hard Fought draw against Wellow

December 03, 2017

Report by Martyn Whitear

The final score was 0 - 0 but it should not have ended up that way after the number of opportunities created in a free flowing end to end match. In the first half Mezza beat his full back on a number of occasions to put in many good crosses which never quite fell to our forwards. Wellow themselves looked like they might score on a number of occasions but good defending and goalkeeping by Louis kept them at bay. Half time 0 - 0. The second half started well for Hamble and followed the pattern of the first half, however neither team managed to create a decent goalscoring opportunity. In fairness the end result was fair to both sides.

U11s Glorious draw for Hamble

November 26, 2017

Sunday 26th November 2017 JPL Match Report by Simon Firth

Whiteley 3 – Hamble Colts 3

Glorious draw for Hamble

Sometimes it’s all about the performance and not the result. Hamble were excellent to today. At times it was like watching Barcelona in their pomp. Unfortunately, we were playing a team happy to hoof it up the park and hope for the best. Blunt but effective. Anyone remember Wimbledon under Joe Kinnear?

1st quarter – Whiteley 1 – 0 Hamble

A slow start from Hamble with lots of pressure from Whiteley. Hamble were unlucky to concede the goal after a scramble for the ball in the penalty area. Hamble had a few chances towards the end of the quarter but could not convert.

2nd quarter – Whiteley 0 – 1 Hamble

Hamble started to dominate the game with some great passing moves and good tactical play. The ball had to go in at some point and after another flowing move the ball was sent across the box for a tap in from Chase. Could have been 2 after the ball crossed the line but no goal given..

3rd quarter – Whiteley 1 – 0 Hamble

An exciting quarter with lots of frustration for Hamble. A goal disallowed for offside, a missed penalty and a breakaway goal for Whiteley. As Sam said, “they must be our bogey team”.

4th quarter – Whiteley 1 – 2 Hamble

Again, Hamble dominated the game. Quick passing and Riley’s devastating pace led to 2 great goals for Hamble, while Whiteley scored after a blatant foul on the edge of the area.

By my reckoning it should have been 5-2 to us. Oh well.

A special mention needs to go to Riley after scoring 2 goals on his debut. Well done Riley.

U16s - Hamble Humbled by Lions

November 19, 2017

Reporter - Martyn Whitear...

First 20 minutes of game involved both teams playing good passing football. Once Littleton went ahead hamble struggled with their game for a short period of time however they then started to look dangerous and could of equalized had Tom Merrill not been brought down on the edge of the box after being put through on goal. Second half started badly and continued as hamble struggled to close Littleton down who managed to score a further 4 goals even though they could have got more. The referees final whistle saved hamble from more embarrassment

U16s short Cup run ended by high flying Totton

November 12, 2017

The U16s brief encounter in the cup was emphatically ended by a very well drilled Totton side currently riding high in Div1. Even before kick off the perceived difference in ability had the boys going in to the game expecting defeat. However, an even start lifted their confidence leading to a very even and well contested start. Slightly against the run of play Totton took the lead after 15 mins after a quick break down the right wing. Colts countered well and only a superb save denied Kajale an equaliser. 1-0 at HT all to play for.

The second half was in to a strong wind and the lads were finding it difficult to clear their half. The game was effectively over when what appeared to be a legitimate penalty was given and duly slotted away despite the taker having to find some earth to recreate the penalty spot that was now just a deep hole (Louis). The boys heads then dropped and the team spirit that had recently been very good was tested again with needless bickering. This sounded ugly from the sidelines. Goals 3 and 4 followed with a strong performance from a pacy no9 and Colts didn't really threaten a comeback at any time. Some comical referring added to the disappointment but did not effect the overall result. A very good first half followed by a not so good second against a team that we matched for most of the game. If the lads take this belief and positivity and play to this level they will do well in the remainder of their league games.

Hamble Colts U11 vs Romsey Town Panthers U11 by Simon Firth

It’s amazing what you can do with almost a full squad (best wishes to Ashton for a quick recovery from an ankle injury). The boys were excellent today in difficult conditions.  Overall, we deserved the win but Romsey Town pushed us close.

First quarter – Hamble 1 – 0 Romsey Town

Some very good passing and pressure from Hamble Colts in the early stages, 2 great efforts from Chase gave Hamble confidence. Kai in goal was a rock making an excellent save in the first few minutes. After some constant pressure from Hamble and a great passing move down the left flank, the ball fell to Flynn who rifled in a shot across the keeper and into the right hand corner of the goal. 1-0 Hamble and it could have been more….

Second quarter – Hamble 1 – 1 Romsey Town

HC started the quarter with real pace and intensity. A goal from Chase was well deserved after great passing move. That move was followed by more excellent fast passing and movement from HC leading to Charlie very nearly scoring what would have been the goal of the game. Well played Hamble. Sometimes the performance is more important than the end result. Great development football. HC were unlucky to concede a penalty after some good defending. It was an unfortunate handball for Chase but well done for coming back to support the defence. The penalty was well taken and nearly saved by Kai. 1-1 in this quarter.

Third quarter – Hamble 0 – 0 Romsey Town

Kai was given a bit of work to do in this quarter. RT pressed forward but Kai was equal to everything being thrown at him.

The battle in midfield boiled over on occasion and our very composed ref kept a lid on a feisty quarter. Well played ref…

Final quarter – Hamble 1 – 1 Romsey Town

The parents were looking stressed as RT kept the pressure. The mud fest was turning into the mud bath. Just as well the boys had the game under control and kept pressing forward finally winning a penalty. Zach was calm under pressure and slotted home. England could learn a thing or two! Credit to RT, they didn’t give up and forced a great save from Kai. But they eventually scored making for a nail biting few minutes.

This was a great win in difficult conditions against a very physical Romsey side. It’s worth noting that we played 4 x 15 minutes. Let’s stick to that format against Pace Puma’s next week. With a full team, we have a real chance…

Testlands Downed in U16 dogfight

November 05, 2017

A feisty encounter for the U16s finally showed they can roll their sleeves up and win when the going gets tough.

An even start in an open game led to a superb finish from Jay from a pin point cross from Tom. The lads were comfortable enough and were looking to double the lead when the ref gave a very soft penalty that nobody had appealed for.  1-1. Adam powered through the defence on a solo run to finish well giving Colts a 2-1 lead at the break. Again Hamble were the most likely to score next but an aimless punt over the top was not dealt with allowing Testlands to equalize again. 2-2. Tommy then rounded off a good move with a stunning power strike from outside the area to grab what looked like it might be the winner with 10 to go. 3-2. Unfortunately the lead was lost again from another hopeful punt and the boys looked devastated. 3-3. With 5 minutes to go up stepped Tyler with a cool finish to regain the lead. 4-3. There was still time for Louis to pull off a stunning point blank save tipping the ball over the bar when it looked as though it was already in. Thankfully the final whistle prevented any further scoring and the boys had come through a stern physical test.

This match felt like a turning point and the boys showed again how if they stick together and trust their passing game they will prosper.  All the boys performed well with a notable debut performance from Riley who was unlucky not to score.

Here's to a rapid rise up the table.

Cup provides U16s light relief from the League

October 28, 2017

The Cup game against BTC gave the lads a much needed morale boosting distraction from the league.

I'm not sure if anything was learnt from this game other than the BTC boys should be commended for their efforts, starting with 10 men then going down to 9 and with a goalkeeping performance that prevented possibly another 10 from going on the score.

Plus points were the return of Josh who looked in good form and unfortunately the return and departure of Brad again who picked up another injury. The boys spread the goals around fairly evenly with 10 different scorers and hat tricks for Adam (4), Tyler and Josh.  0-7 at half time and 0-18 at the end when the match turned in to an ugly looking feeding frenzy.  Proper football went out of the window.

U11s - Hamble humbled by a strong Pace team

October 28, 2017

U11s - JPL Match Report – Sunday 29th October 2017 - by Simon Firth

Pace Puma’s U11 vs Hamble Colts U11

Hamble humbled by a strong Pace team

An extra hour in bed and a week off from football didn’t seem to help the boys perform at their best. After some excellent performances in the JPL this season, today proved to be ‘one of those days’ where nothing seemed to go our away. With no Kai in goal and facing the strongest team in the league meant only an exceptional performance would be good enough. That was not to be..

So, to the match.

First quarter (20 minutes) – Pace 0-0 Hamble

A very tight game with both sides playing good football. Pace passed the ball well and dominated possession but they couldn’t break through our defence. Flynn did well in goal. Hamble looked dangerous on the counter-attack but the final ball wasn’t quite good enough. Chase was working hard up front and finally won a free kick on the edge of the area. His effort was an inch wide of the top left corner. Could have been a game changer…

Second quarter (20 minutes) – Pace 4-0 Hamble

Pace continued to dominate the game and scored an early goal after a scramble in the box. A second goal followed about 10 minutes in following a Hamble goal kick. Pace were pressing hard and we were boxed in too often when taking goal kicks. 2 goals followed making it 4-0.

Third quarter (20 minutes) – Pace 1-1 Hamble

This was a much better quarter from Hamble. The boys showed signs of how they have been playing for much of the season so far. A great passing move down the left flank left led to a goal from Jake. Excellent play from Hamble. However, Pace were always a threat going forward but it took a goal of real quality to break through the Hamble defence. A great strike from the Pace No.8 (I think) right in the top corner made it 1-1.

Fourth quarter (20 minutes) – Pace 7-0 Hamble

We thought it was all over. Apparently not! After an hour of football with only 2 subs against a Pace team with at least 5 subs, the extra 20 mins was always going to be difficult. The boys were clearly shattered but it did give the Pace players more game time given the number of subs…

A quick check of FA rules suggests that players should not be expected play more that 2 x 30 minute halves with development leagues like the JPL allowed to divide 60 minutes of football into quarters.

*note that the scores are for the quarters only

Comment
The U16s play 2 x 40 min halves and In the Tyro the U12s play 2x30 mins So whichever way you look at it I think they have played too long

Housebuilder helps youth team kick off new season in style

October 21, 2017

Youngsters at Hamble Colts FC have a fresh new look for the season ahead thanks to local housebuilder, Barratt Homes.

The company, which is working hard to create new homes down the road in Bursledon, has sponsored the under 16s team and kitted the players out with brand-new new gear.

“We are always keen to support local clubs in the communities where we are building new homes,” said Barratt Homes sales director Michelle Storer. “And with Hamble Colts playing just down the road from our new Monarchs Keep development in Bursledon, we’re delighted to be able to help out.

“The club is a not for profit organisation and every penny they raise goes straight back in to fund new equipment for the young players. We’re proud to be showing our support for such an important local sports resource.”

Hamble Colts club secretary Joanna Ford added: “We’re so grateful to Barratt Homes for its support. The team is in love with the new kit and we hope it’ll bring them plenty of luck in the current season.”

Hamble Colts has two youth teams – the under 11s and under 16s. The under 16s currently play in division two of the Southampton City League. It has 17 players in the squad, which plays at the Hamble 1st team pitch.

U16s Improving but not quite enough

October 21, 2017

A much improved Colts performance still wasn't quite enough to take anything from the game against Salisbury (now played twice in the first 5 fixtures ??)  The lads started positively finally going back to their passing game. This gave them a few very good chance with Tyler grabbing the opener after a well worked move mid way through the half. Further chances came and went and Louis made a couple of great saves to keep Colts ahead at the break.  It felt like another goal was needed to kill off the game after dominating the half. Salisbury came out suitably chastised and were a different side. A free header from a corner and a break away goal saw them take the lead within the opening 10 minutes. Colts did not offer too much in reply and whilst pushing for the equalizer let another break away goal slip to effectively end the tie.

A much improved display without full reward, possibly a draw would have been fair. Certainly looks now like a battle at the bottom and the lads need to show the same first half fight to get themselves up the table.

The Opponents Match Report

October 21, 2017

SALISBURY FC U16 side had to come from behind to chalk up their latest victory in the Southampton Youth League at home to Hamble Colts.
The young Whites started well and could have been two up in the first ten minutes, striker Will Haslam found himself clean through twice, only to be denied on both occasions by the advancing keeper.
Salisbury had plenty of possession and chances but Hamble played some neat passing football and they were able to find a way through the Salisbury defence to take the lead on 25 minutes. The Whites continued to create chances and a great run down the left by Ed Stagg and his good cross saw Haslam denied by the keeper again from five yards.
But within three minutes of the break they were back on level terms when a perfect inswinging corner from Jack Thompson was met by Haslam, who this time made no mistake with a powerful header. The young Whites then proceeded to dominate the second half even in the face of a strong wind.
It was no surprise when ten minutes into the half Haslam released Brad Waters who ran through the Hamble defence and calmly slotted home to put the Whites 2-1 up.
However Hamble were not out of the game and Salisbury keeper Dan McCarthy made a smart save with just five minutes left on the clock.
Alex Simpson and Josh Connolly had opportunities to extend the lead but it was sub Sam Edwards who pounced on a loose ball to seal the game with the third goal in the last minute.
Salisbury’s 3-1 victory keeps them second in the league and very much in contention for the title.

U16s Up and Running

October 07, 2017

That illusive first win finally arrived with the visit of Littleton Leopards, who finished runners up to the lads last year. As is the way with this division, every game was expected to be tight and this was no exception. The lads started well showing much more confidence and belief and finally looking more like a team. This was rewarded after 15 minutes with Tyler superbly drilling home from the edge of the box to take a deserved lead. A second goal would have made the game comfortable but a lack of concentration let Littleton back in and they equalized on the half hour with a very well worked and well finished effort. The heads dropped and that feeling of deja vu was heavy in the air again. HT 1-1

The second half started well for the Colts as they  regained the midfield with gritty performances from Tyler and Harry. After 5 minutes the lead was retaken as Lewis volleyed calmly into the roof of the net from a corner. This was just about right for the run of play but the doubts were still there and had it not been for a fantastic double save from Louis late on, the scores would have been level. For once, Hamble managed to see out the game with no further scares to notch up their first win and climb to the dizzy heights of 8th in the table.

A very good win to get the lads going but it should have been a lot easier and it would appear the opponents today are most likely going to be one of the weakest we will meet.

U16s pain continues

September 23, 2017

A much better all round performance was still not enough to earn a point this week against BTC. A more disciplined and structured style showed that the lads might be getting used to each other. An even first half was marred with 3 minutes to go when a well worked move saw BTC take the lead. Straight from the  kick off a soft corner was given away with BTC taking full advantage bundling the ball in to go into the break 2 up.

A determined start to the second half was rewarded with a Mezza special scoring direct from a corner again. These goals are no fluke but the boys might be struggling if that is our only attacking plan to storm up the table.

As with the week before the boys never really looked like they would go on to get anything from the game despite a lot of effort being put in. 1-2 defeat.

U16s Tough Start Continues

September 16, 2017

The tough start continued for the U16s facing the only team to beat them in the league last year. Wellow were a well drilled strong side and have improved on that adding some good new players.

A tight start with nothing much in it changed when Wellow took the lead on 11 mins after a good cross for a tap in on the 6 yard box. The lead was doubled on 28 minutes with a great solo effort that should perhaps have been stopped earlier. In between, Colts had the odd chance but lacked any fluent play. Wellow hit the bar from a corner towards the end of the half. HT 0-2.

The lack lustre performance was punished with Wellow scoring again on 60 mins.  Colts were shocked in to life and started to take control of the game with much more urgency and determination. This was rewarded with Adam finishing well after a host of chances were cleared on 63 mins 1-3. This was quickly followed by another for Adam 5 minutes later. The final 10 minutes were frantic with Wellow panicking and Colts sensing more goals were there for the taking. Despite some good attacks and a few goal mouth scrambles no further clear cut chances came and Wellow held on for a deserved victory.

The lads fought back well but left themselves too much to do after a poor start.

U16s narrowly defeated in season opener

September 09, 2017

Hamble Colts U16 opened the new campaign with a home tie against Salisbury who won Div 4 last year and won the cup beating our boys on the way.

Colts were quickly behind after 3 minutes but levelled on 12 minutes where Tom M scored directly from a corner. Further pressure led to Colts taking a 2-1 lead scored by Adam. Salisbury leveled on 26 mins. 2-2 at half time.

Despite chances at both ends and good saves by both keepers Salisbury seemed to have the edge in control, possession and speed and they were rewarded with a late winner on 76 minutes.

Probably a fair result against a well organised, strong opponent.

The first of many tough games to come.
